Reprint of an article published in the American Field on November 28, 1885 about a tour of the L.C. Smith factory in Syracuse, New York and a visit with Lyman Cornelius Smith.

Describes loading brass shells and shooting pheasants with an 8 gauge L.C. Smith Grade 2 in Nebraska.

2004 Events by Len Applegate

Membership and Newsletter Update by Len Applegate
Announces that Andy Anderson and Bob Trefry were elected to three-year terms as Directors of the L.C. Smith Collectors Association, that the organization has 82 members (including 17 life members), and that this newsletter contains a new Member’s Forum page.

Member’s Forum
In this new feature of the newsletter, Len Applegate addresses markings found on barrels of some L.C. Smith shotguns in answer to a question asked by Bob Trefry in an earlier newsletter.

Summarizes the work that went into the exhibit and shooting event at the 5 th Annual Southern Side-by-Side in Sanford, North Carolina in April 2004, discusses the results, and invites everyone to participate in future L.C. Smith events.

L.C. Smith Maker, Syracuse, New York – Part II: The L.C. Smith Trophy
by John N. Davis
Includes letters between L. C. Smith and Charles Kern, President of the Illinois State Sportsmen’s Association, in which Smith promises to donate a shooting cup and Kern accepts the cup. Results from the 1886 shoot and one in 1888 at the Ohio Trap Shooter’s League are discussed.

Discusses the work of Russ Ruppel and Daryl Hallquist to capture information on the Baker shotguns and early L.C. Smith guns made in Syracuse.

L.C. Smith Maker, Syracuse, New York – Part III, the Ben Teipel Gun

Reprint of an article published in The American Field on March 27, 1886 telling the story of renowned shooter Ben Teipel sending his Parker to L.C. Smith in Syracuse to be rebored according to the Smith system of multiplied chokes.
