Frequently, only limited information (shipping date, gauge, barrel length, grade, and inspector marks) is available. Depending on shipping date, the remaining records may contain slightly more or even less data. But even that data can confirm the originality of your gun regarding the possibility of having been up-graded or having the barrels cut. The Hunter Arms Company did maintain detailed records, as evidenced by the few surviving shipping ledgers. Unfortunately, all that remains of those original records are the much less detailed shipping department records. All of the original, much more detailed order and production books were lost or destroyed by the Marlin Firearms Company. Those remaining were literally retrieved them from a trash dumpster by William Brophy.
